Reunion, a hiker’s paradise, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Reunion is an ideal destination for hiking.

For hikers, novices or experienced, the island offers more than 900 km of marked trails. They cross a very varied environment, of a breathtaking beauty: dense tropical forest in the East; savannahs or sugar cane fields in the West; lunar landscapes on the volcano; walks along the waves of the ocean.

This unique variety of landscapes has earned the island the designation of its Pitons, Cirques and Remparts by UNESCO as a World Heritage natural property in 2010.

Reunion Island has three Grande Randonnée trails certified by the Fédération Française de Randonnée Pédestre:

The GR®R1 (60 km) goes around the Piton des Neiges and through the circuses of Salazie, Mafate and Cilaos.

The GR®R2 (130 km) crosses the island from north to south, from the shore to the highest peaks (Piton des Neiges and Piton de la Fournaise).

The GR® R3 (39 km) criss-crosses the Mafate Circus, a site accessible only on foot: an exotic and authentic walk, thanks to the meeting with the inhabitants of the islets, these hamlets scattered in the heart of the National Park.
